Farmers Market BOOT CAMP

Yup, I pulled on my Farmers Market Boots and went off to camp on Friday Morning  just to see if there was something I was missing or needed to expand upon for our Farmers Markets.  I did learn a lot and even asked some questions that were pertinent to the markets.

One subject that was brought up was SNAP which is Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.  I would like to see this program introduced at out markets this year.  The customer goes to the market’s information booth and uses their Hoosier Works SNAP EBT card to purchase $1.oo tokens then  they can use the tokens anywhere at the market to purchase eligible food items.  No change is given back.  So if the customer is shopping and picks out $4.75 worth of food you can opt to give them additional items to meet a total of $5.00. Dairy, eggs, fish, poultry, vegetables, jams and jellies, baked goods, bread, meats, syrup and honey and fruits can all be purchased with SNAP .  See below for more information both in English and Spanish.

Please share this information with everyone you know that the markets will be signing up for the SNAP program, WIC (Womens, Infants and Children)program and the FMNP (Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program) .  These programs are essential to all local communities and neighborhoods.  With farmers markets being in neighborhoods that don’t have a big grocery store within walking distance, it is nice to offer these programs so everyone gets a chance to purchase much needed fresh food items more frequently.  You know what they say “FRESH IS BEST”

We are still looking for a couple more vegetable vendors for our Southport Farmers Market as well as the Southside Farmers Market.  If you or someone you know is looking for a market home, please send them our way.  Southport is Tuesday 10-2 and Thursday 3-6:30 in Southport.  The Southside Farmers Market is at the corner of Southport Road and S. East St, St. John’s United Church of Christ, Wednesday and Fridays 4-7.

Tomorrow, we might talk a little bit more about why we are here: Gardening and making our plants to produce fabulous blossoms, juicy fruit and beautiful leaves.  Until then, Yup Spring is just around the corner so keep those positive thoughts.

I was the Market Master for Southport Farmers Market which I started 5 years ago. I have turned the market over to a very quialified lady who loves working with customers and vendors alike. I spend many hours working on the updates to post here and bring you all the newest and exciting information of products, gardening, cooking and baking. I also am a Administrator for a popular Blog known as Jenn's Blah Blah Blog. Other things I do are fishing and baking.
