VETERAN ACCESS TO HEALTHY, LOCAL FOOD

AS MANY AS 1 MILLION VETERANS NATIONWIDE LIVE WITH DIABETES IN ADDITION TO OTHER DIET-RELATED CONDITIONS.

There are currently no national veteran nutrition incentive programs.

THE STARTLING FACTS

  • Roughly 1.7 million (7%) veterans live in SNAP (food stamp)-receiving households
  • 41% of Veterans Health Administration-enrolled vets are obese
  • Nearly 1 in 4, 24% have diabetes.
  • VA patients also tend to be older, have lower incomes, and have limited access to high-quality, healthy food

CONNECTING RESOURCES

There are 1,649 veteran facilities registered with the VA and 8,482 farmers markets registered with the USDA.

With the launch of Community Foodworks’ new VA-Farmers Market Finder, veterans, social workers, and policy makers can now locate farmers markets near veteran facilities nationwide and encourage food-insecure, high health-risk veterans to visit their local market and adopt healthy habits founded on eating well.
