Have you Eaten your Veggies Today?

It is commonplace to hear a parent tell his/her child to eat their vegetables when at the dinner table.  Since vegetables are an important part of the Personal Trainer Food™ program, I felt it prudent to delve into the significance of these foods in your daily diet.  And what better place to find those fresh fruits and vegetables than the Southside Farmers Market.

Last week, I discussed the importance of water, as well as how crucial it is to keep hydrated.  I hope you were able to take stock in my words, and added more drinking water into your daily diet.  In doing so, you are changing your lifestyle for the better.  Vegetables are just as important.

When you enroll in the Personal Trainer Food program, your main concern is to lose weight.  As my Personal Trainer Food coach said, “weight loss is all about consistency and habit.  It is “making something sustainable for yourself long term.”  It is adapting a new lifestyle for yourself as you learn what foods burn fat, so you take off those extra pounds, as well as which foods you should eliminate from your diet all together.  Vegetables play an extremely important part in your diet.  On the REV plan, I eat three portions of vegetables a day:  one for lunch and two for dinner.  However, federal dietary guidelines recommend that you eat at least nine servings per day. Now, I care for most vegetables, okay not really most, but a lot, but to eat nine servings of vegetables a day would mean that I would be eating all day long.  I do not find those guidelines attainable for the majority of American families.

I have heard it said that variety is the spice of life, and it is definitely true with vegetables, as you have a choice on a daily basis.  The majority of the day-to-day used vegetables are very low in calories, and saturated fats.  These low-calorie but nutrient-rich foods help the human body stay fit, and free from diseases.

Did you know you should always purchase small quantities of your vegetables, so they will keep their freshness for a day or so?  Of course, you want to buy your vegetables that are bright in color and flavor, and feel heavy in your hands.  Look for blemishes, spots, fungal mold and signs of insecticide spray.  Buy whole vegetables instead of sections of them, also.  Buying your vegetables fresh ensures you receive the health benefits.

BENEFITS OF ADDING VEGETABLES TO YOUR DAILY DIET 

  • Reduced risk of many chronic diseases;
  • Dietary fiber from vegetables helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and may lower risk of heart disease;
  • May reduce risk for stroke, cancer, and type-2 diabetes;
  • Vegetables have generous amounts of vitamins to regulate metabolism as well as used to convert the fats and carbohydrates into energy;
  • Green vegetables have health-promoting benefits;
  • Can help to reduce high blood pressure and protects against cataracts and macular degeneration, the major cause of loss of vision among people over age 65;
  • Vegetables also have a positive effect upon blood sugar which can help keep appetite in check;
  • A vegetable rich diet can help protect you from arthritis, dementia, and can even help slow down your body’s aging process;
  • Your yellow and orange color vegetables are rich in Vitamin A, whereas dark-green vegetables are a good source of minerals, as well as anti-oxidants;
  • Vegetables hydrate your skin, helping to reduce wrinkles.

The aforementioned list is just a sample of the reasons why you need to eat your vegetables daily.  Vegetables provide a lot of the vitamins and minerals you need in your daily diet.

Week Three

This program is simply terrific!  I am so happy, even though I lost less weight this past week than in former weeks.  I learned from my Personal Trainer that this process is normal since my body needs to adjust to being at a new weight.  He stated, “weight loss is a nonlinear descent that requires necessary periods of equilibrium.” 

Although I have not taken any measurements throughout the program, I know I have lost inches, especially in my upper body.  I am able to detect this easily when selecting a blouse that I have not worn for a while, and after trying it on, I find the sleeves are loose on my upper arms.  My lower body is the hardest area for me.  This is the area where I usually gain the weight or inches first, and always the last area to lose the weight, or inches.  For health reasons, I cannot do any strenuous exercises, but I believe the more exercise that I can receive on a daily basis, the more toned my body will become.  Therefore, I am continuing to exceed my required 20-minute walks, or 2000 steps daily, when possible. 

I am pleased that I have lost a total of 13.8 pounds to date, which is a great start to my new lifestyle.  I feel good, and best of all, I think I look better, as well.  I contribute my great stride to the information that I am learning to live a healthier lifestyle from the Personal Trainer program, as well as the delicious food I received at the start of the program.  I would be remiss if I left out my Personal Trainer Coach, who has been a tremendous help, also.  He is always available by email to answer any questions I might have, as well as taking a genuine interest in my progress.

For my dinner or the supper meal, I have 2 serving of vegetables.  Two of my favorite vegetables are Green Beans and Lima Beans, although I find it hard to resist the Broccoli and Cauliflower, as well.  The Personal Trainer Food has a good selection of various vegetables from which to choose.

The Garlic Butter Sauce that I received along with my food shipment from Personal Trainer Food spices up my plain vegetables.  Since I am not a gourmet cook, I just sprinkle a bit of the Sauce on my veggies for a change of pace.

Movin’ on Down

Do you feel different?  Have you relied on your scales to tell the difference you experienced, or have you judged your weight loss by the way your clothing fits?  How about your energy level?  Has that changed?  Do not expect huge results the first week of your diet plan.  You did not gain the weight overnight; neither can you lose it overnight.  It takes time to see the results with Personal Trainer Food.  Nevertheless, the results will come as you continue your efforts to lose the weight, so long as you do not cheat.

As I approach the end of my first official week on the Personal Trainer Food program, I can definitely tell the difference, not so much in the weight department, or the way my clothing fits, but in my energy level.  The information that I received at the start of the program, listed various symptoms that I might encounter.  Normally, if I do not eat, I tend to get a headache, and while I was fasting, I did experience this sensation; however, to curb this, I simply drank a cup of warm broth.  Strangely enough, I did not have any cravings for any sugary substances while I was fasting.  What I did encounter the actual first day of the program was weakness, as well as a feeling of being tired.  This is normal because of the sugar withdrawal.  It normally takes about a week for your body to adjust to burning stored fat as fuel.  Keeping hydrated helps your body detoxify from sugar faster.

I can tell you that the food from Personal Trainer Food™ is delicious.  For breakfast, I had an egg omelet, as well as a sausage patty.  For those of you who skip breakfast, think again.  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  It gives you energy to get going, as it has been several hours since you last consumed any food.  While I am accustomed to a much larger meal for breakfast, I was eating the wrong foods.  Personal Trainer Food™ is teaching me a different lifestyle while consuming a full portion of food.  When I consulted my family physician several months ago about my weight issue, she told me that the average person eats approximately twice the amount of food in one day that our body actually needs, and to limit the amount of food I consume.  While she might be correct in her diagnosis, if I continued to partake in the wrong foods, even as I slimmed down on my portion sizes, I would not be able to drop any of the weight.

Week One

I have never considered myself a nutritionist in any sense of the word, but the Personal Trainer Food™ has helped me to recognize what foods your body needs to be healthy and active, as well as to assist in your weight loss goals.  Of course, the company has made it so easy by supplying me with prepackaged meals for the program.  By eating the Personal Trainer Food™, the correct foods for consumption, you direct your body to burn the stored body fat.

The various plans of Personal Trainer Food™ are designed to fit your needs.  On the REV! plan, I found that I am not hungry at all between meals, and only get a craving after dinner and before bedtime.  Therefore, I have saved my snack until that time of the day.  You are allowed two snacks a day, but I have discovered that I do not really need a second snack.  I think this craving late in the evening is psychosomatic.  You might experience cravings throughout the day, as each of us have a different body chemistry.  So, choose whatever works for you.

Satisfy your Craving with a Mad Mini

Now that the Southside Market is open, you don’t have any excuse not to get those fresh fruits to go with your ice cream treat.  With the impending summer months upon us, just don’t treat yourself with regular ice cream; treat yourself to some Mad Minis.

When I was little, my parents would treat my sister, brothers and me to an ice cream cone, occasionally.  It was a special treat for us, but I can remember that my mother always insisted on the sugar cones.  We hardly ever went out for ice cream, since there were no stores close to us.  Instead, my parents would purchase a half gallon of vanilla flavored ice cream at the grocery store.  With four children, as well as my father and mother, declaring their preferences, we usually ended up with vanilla to please everyone.  Moreover, we were happy at that.

As time passed, we saw the rise in soft serve ice cream being offered to the public; however, the secret to this was that the product was not actually ice cream, but an ice milk.  Ice cream stores popped up everywhere you turned and their specialty was the curly Q on the top of the cone.  Still today, you see other stores who boast of 31 flavors, but those stores are far and few between.  As time progressed, you saw the expansion of ice cream products like the Dilly Bar and ice cream cakes, as well as ice cream sandwiches.

Ice cream sandwiches have always been my favorite with the ice cream placed between two cookie like layers.  However, as much as I love ice cream sandwiches, I rarely purchase them since the product is on the larger size, and my husband prefers a Rocky Road flavor.  I am yet to find this flavor in a sandwich.  Nevertheless, I recently came across a product called Mad Minis, which are the perfect size for a simple treat for anyone.
